Community members will participate in a masked, tribute dance “La Viejada de San Jose” to honor our dearly departed. Rehearsals are sponsored by Bay Area folklorico groups and everyone–dancers and non-dancers– are invited to participate in this health in mind and spirit event.

La Viejada is a traditional dance originating in the Huasteca Region of the state of Veracruz that honors those who have passed. The masked danzantes honor our dearly departed.

La Viejada de San Jose transplants this danza with traditional sonecitos, as well as, new ones created by local young composer, Luis Xavier Garcia.  These songs specifically honor San Jose history and landmarks: La Plaza, La Pulga, Story & King, EastSide Llorona, Sal Si Puedes.  The new song for 2018, “Luna y Sol”, honors the hard-work and dedication of San Jose State University’s talented student folklorico dance company.

La Viejada de San Jose welcomes anyone who wishes to honor their deceased in a very personal and spiritual way. No dance experience required.
